Custom Website Solutions That Actually Fit Your Workflow

Introduction

You can have exactly what you want—functionality that fits your workflow, lives directly on your site, and reflects how your organization actually operates. Many business owners turn to plugins because they seem like the obvious solution. And for simple enhancements, they often are. But when the functionality is central to your business or operations, plugins frequently fall short.

The appeal of plugins lies in their convenience. But that convenience comes with trade-offs: security risks from outdated or abandoned code, slowdowns from bloated installations, clunky user experiences, and, most importantly, workflows that only almost match what your team needs or is already doing. Over time, what seemed like a shortcut becomes a limitation. Eventually, you find yourself working around your tools, rather than your tools working for you.

We’ve helped dozens of clients rethink this approach. When we build custom functionality we’re not starting from scratch, we’re extending proven platforms like WordPress to create tightly integrated systems that reflect your actual processes, not generic ones. Here are a few examples.

Case Studies

Custom Event System

One large association chapter came to us with a patchwork of spreadsheets, Eventbrite links, and email threads. Staff were duplicating effort, chasing down missing details, and struggling to track attendance and continuing education credits. We designed a custom event management system directly within their site—one that lets them manage events, promote CEUs, and handle registration, all from one place.

Professional Directory

An industry organization needed a way to connect the public with verified professionals and their membership, but their existing model was slow, generic, and didn’t allow for easy searching and filtering. Because of this, they had difficulty selling listings in the directory. We built a fully custom directory with advanced search and filtering, optimized for mobile, and capable of supporting thousands of entries without breaking under scale. They are now collecting more listing fees than ever.

Local Resource Finder

For a nonprofit serving at-risk communities, we created a tool that helps users quickly find nearby resources by entering a zip code and/or selecting a need. The system was built to be fast, private, and easy to use, avoiding the clinical, impersonal feel common in social services directories.

Job Boards That Actually Fit

Several of our association clients wanted to host job boards on their own site, but were stuck linking out to third-party platforms or trying to adapt rigid plugin solutions. We developed job board systems that matched their internal processes, allowing members to submit jobs, make payment, and repost listings. All without needing to leave the site or wrestle with someone else’s idea of what the workflow SHOULD be.

Tiered Team & Contact Directories

One international nonprofit needed a directory system that reflected their complex structure, with staff, board members, and regional fellows spread across multiple countries. We designed a flexible, searchable system that made it easy to browse by team, location, or function—without relying on generic templates or manual maintenance.

Geographic Information

Also from the non-profit space, the org wanted a way to tie news and events to a visual map by location. Now users can peruse content by what’s specifically happening near them on a map.

Other solutions we’ve designed (to get your ideas flowing)

  • An archive of publications stored on a third party publisher site
  • A “Links and Resources” library, tied specifically to individual committees and searchable by committee, topic, or keyword.
  • A Directory of works for an author which allows one interface so users can find and purchase their work whether it’s self-published or available on one of several external publishing sites.
  • A route information tool for a transport company
  • Custom awards archive and voting systems
  • Integrations with external booking, info tracking, CRM, and other workflow systems

Easier Than Expected

These aren’t massive enterprise builds. They’re focused, thoughtful solutions created by understanding how the organization works and designing accordingly. In many cases, what the client thought they needed—a plugin—turned out to be a limitation. Once we showed them what was possible, the path forward became clear.

If you’re looking to add real functionality to your site, don’t settle for what a plugin almost does. Let’s talk about what you actually need.
